Metabolic Testing

Uplyft Fitness and Total Health Systems team up to offer Metabolic Testing

Whether you are new to working out or training for your next marathon, you can benefit from metabolic testing. The Metabolic Assessment measures how efficiently your body burns calories both at rest and while exercising. When you know your personal metabolic profile we can create a personal plan that is customized to you. Your metabolic profile helps your trainer determine how long you should exercise and how intensely (many times it’s not as hard as you think). We will also know how many calories you should be eating to reach your goals.  After completing both your resting and exercise assessment we can make both an exercise and dietary plan that takes the guesswork out. Just follow the plan and get results.

Benefits of Metabolic Testing

VO2 Testing with CardioCoach gives you what you need to succeed!

You work hard at staying in shape.  But what if all your time and effort aren’t getting you the maximum results?

Professional athletes know that VO2 testing is the way to measure your cardio fitness and maximize your workout.  But cost and complexity has limited its availability to only the most elite (and well paid!) athletes.

NOW CARDIOCOACH and TOTAL HEALTH SYSTEMS can give you VO2 results in a simple, affordable test.

CardioCoach gives you the most complete fitness assessment available:

  • VO2 Max
  • Peak oxygen consumption
  • Calories burned at different heart rates
  • Anaerobic threshold
  • Target Intensity Zones

With this test, we can customize a workout based on your unique level of fitness instead of a formula.  By training in your personalized Intensity Zones, you will see results you never thought possible!

VO2 Max is the ULTIMATE indicator is cardiovascular fitness.  In the past, VO2 testing has only been available at hospitals and universities.  But now CardioCoach brings this technology to Total Health Systems!

Get the Most Out of your Workout

Charts you see on exercise equipment and wall showing target heart rates are actually just averages based on age and weight.  The CardioCoach measures your precise target heart rate based on anaerobic threshold, then calculates your unique zones. These Zones give you the precise heart rates necessary to optimize each level of exercise and maximize your results.  With Target Intensity Zones, you’ll work out smarter, not harder!

Decrease Fatigue and Injury

Frequently we push ourselves thinking, “no pain, no gain.”  The truth is, pushing beyond one’s optimal training zone leads to fatigue and discomfort.  It will also cause increased soreness after the workout and may contribute to exercise related injury.  When you know your zones and use them for training, cardiovascular exercise is comfortable. Even a beginner can go the distance!

Burn More FAT!

VO2 testing reveals the exercise level that will optimize a person’s ability to burn fat.  The term “aerobic exercise” has been commonly used in relation to burning fat.  But without VO2 testing, fitness professionals have had to rely on crude estimates to determine what level of exercise intensity would be “aerobic” or fat burning.  Now, with VO2 testing readily available, you can know the precise level of intensity that will truly maximize the amount of fat you burn.

How does Metabolic Testing Work?

The VO2 Test is as Easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Put on a heart rate strap and face mask.  The mask is connected to the CardioCoach device.
  2. Begin to exercise on a stationary device such as a treadmill, cycle, or stairstepper.  Your trainer will instruct you to gradually increase your intensity over a period of 6 to 20 minutes.
  3. The CardioCoach will indicate when the test is completed.  You can cool down while your Target Intensity Zones are calculated and printed in a simple, insightful report.

The CardioCoach utilizes the same technology as ICU metabolic testing.  Because every calorie a person consumes requires a fixed amount of oxygen to be converted to energy, the CardioCoach measures the oxygen you consume to calculate calories burned.  To measure oxygen consumption, all of the air exhaled by the patient must be collected by the CardioCoach. Two one-way valves are configured in the KORR MetaBreather to ensure that only fresh air is inhaled and all exhaled gas passes through the hose and into the machine.  A nose-clip ensures that all exhaled air is analyzed.

Exercise Metabolic Rate Test

Price – $60

This part of the assessment requires more effort on your part. It usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes. You can walk or jog on the treadmill or ride a bike or even the elliptical trainer. The intensity will gradually increase but in the end we know how many calories you burn and how much fat you burn. We use this information to create a scientific based cardio program with the goal being to teach your body how burn more efficiently. You will know what heart rate you need to work up to and for how long and how often. No guesswork, no following cookie cutter program that is not right for you. Just a clear simple plan for YOU.

Resting Metabolic Rate Test

Price – $72*

Metabolism is the process of converting food (calories) into energy.  The efficiency with which your body does this is referred to as your metabolic rate.  Many factors affect a person’s metabolic rate: weight, age, body composition, hormone levels, and gender making it a highly unique number.

*The price of the test includes your own personal hose, which is required. The hose is reusable, so subsequent testing, if desired, costs $60

Why Test your Resting Metabolic Rate?

Understanding your body’s unique metabolic rate will allow your practitioner to customize your weight loss or maintenance program around your needs.

  • It can screen for a slowed metabolism that may explain frustrated attempts to lose weight in the past.
  • It can reveal changes in your metabolism during the weight loss process that can help trouble shoot a frustrating plateau.
  • Once you reach your goal, an RMR measurement can give you the precise caloric prescription for maintenance to help you sustain that goal weight.

Preparing for the Test

In order to get the most accurate results, it is important to follow the standard protocol for a Resting Metabolic Rate test:

  1. You should avoid eating 4 hours before the test.
  2. Avoid exercising on the day of your test.
  3. If possible, avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine on the day of the test.

During the Test

During the test you will be invited to sit or recline in a comfortable position.  You will be given a KORR MetaBreather mouthpiece to breathe in to. You will be given a KORR MetaBreather mouthpiece to breathe in to.  You will be breathing in air from the room, but the gas that you breathe out will go into the metabolic analyzer to measure your metabolic rate.

  1. Relax and close your eyes during the test.
  2. Keep lips sealed lightly around the MetaBreather.  It is important that ll the air you breathe out is analyzed.
  3. In just 10 minutes, your metabolic rate will be measured!
